While most of us have heard of root canals, not everyone is fully aware of what the procedure is and what to expect when they need one. A root canal is a procedure that is typically done when deep decay causes the pulp (the inner soft connective tissue of your tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and blood supply) to become infected. This can cause significant pain and can lead to more serious infections. While reasons for a root canal may vary, the procedure is fairly consistent.

During a root canal, the pulp is removed from inside of the tooth and inner chambers of your tooth’s roots and the area is cleaned and shaped using very small instruments. The space is then filled with a biocompatible material and specialized cement to seal the root canal. Finally, most patients will need a crown installed.

We are passionate about providing our patients with a comfortable and positive dental experience. During your root canal we will do everything we can to ensure your comfort, including local anesthetic as well as nitrous oxide, should you choose to use it. After your root canal, it is normal to experience some discomfort, though proper aftercare can minimize pain. To help with this you are encouraged to:

  • Eat soft foods
  • Clean teeth gently
  • Watch for bleeding, swollen area around your tooth, or pain that won’t subside
  • Avoid strenuous activity and intense exercise during your recovery
